The piano teacher

It’s not my fault he wanted to dance.

I simply played the music and let him waltz me to me feet, spin me across the room.

This was only supposed to be a lesson, but before I’m even aware, his lips are on mine and his hand under my skirt.

And then she walks in.

“I’ll excuse myself.” I scurry to the bathroom down the hall.

These walls have always been known for their acoustics. In the evenings, the opera students come to practice their harmonies.

From the vent overhead the screaming pours down, fills the room, and my conscience.

Visitor

Tell me I’m not crazy.”

“You’re not.”

“See, why don’t I believe you?”

“Because I’m just repeating what you said.”

“So you don’t hear that?”

He opens his mouth, pauses, then closes it. We wait and listen. There’s the hum of the air conditioning, the thud of bass from our downstairs neighbor’s music, the distant chirping of crickets outside.

“I don’t hear anything,” he says. “Maybe you’re just—”

“Don’t say it.”

“Okay.”

As he lets out a loud sigh, the foot of our bed dips down, as if someone neither of us can see just sat in the center.

This Morning’s Prompt

The morning after

My Inspired Story

We were both a little tipsy off eggnog Christmas night.

And when Laila said her only wish was to no longer be an only child, we decided to make good on that promise.

Now I’m in the CVS with a splitting headache looking for the morning after pill while my wife, having changed her mind, waits in the car.

“Christmas must have been a wild night,” the cashier says. “You’re the fourth husband here looking for the Plan B One Step.”

“So does that mean you don’t have it?”

She shakes his head. “Maybe try the CVS on Main?”

I slide the Tylenol Extra Strength across the counter. At least this trip wasn’t a total waste.

When I return to the car my wife looks up at me hopeful. I hate to disappoint her.

“Well, at least Laila will have a little brother or sister in nine months.”

But maybe next Christmas we won’t spike the eggnog.

This Morning’s Prompt

Wine Tasting

My Inspired Story

“This rosé pairs great with the chocolate. Take a bite, and then a sip. What flavors do you taste?” the instructor says.

My wife nibbles at the chocolate. She moves for the final glass in a line of five we’ve tasted so far, spins it around to swirl the faint pink liquid, peers into the glass to examine the viscous wine legs cascading down the sides, then tips it into her mouth.

“Well?”

“Mmmm, I taste hints of raspberry.” She smacks her lips. “Much sweeter with the chocolate. Which is this one?”

“Zinfandel,” I answer.

She points down to the scoring card. “Write it down.”

I scribble with the pen. So far, our Christmas wine list is…everything.

This Morning’s Prompt

Vacation

My Inspired Story

It’s a miracle our plans haven’t derailed with everything going on in the world right now. There’s still time for things to go left, but we’re at the gate; we have our negative tests, our passports; UAE hasn’t closed its borders yet.

“Now boarding flight 722. Toronto to Dubai.”

My heart leaps in my chest. This is it! After postponing our wedding three times, finally settling for a small ceremony at the magistrate’s office in the county jail because it was the only one open after the one at City Hall shut down due to a positive case, temporarily losing Grandma’s ring and Mama freaking out to the point of having a full-on asthma attack over it, we’re together, we’re married, and we’re just twelve hours nonstop from a two-week honeymoon in the most beautiful city in the world!

“Shit! Shit, shit, shit, shit!”

I turn to my husband—I still get giddy when I say it—he’s spinning around like a dog chasing his tail. He’s patting his chest, his back pockets. Rubbing his hands all over his naked face.

“What happened?”

“I lost my mask.”

This Morning’s Prompt

Coffee shop

My Inspired Story

I saw him before he even entered the coffee shop, smiled to myself when I heard his order—chai latte, same as mine.

I pretended not to notice when he sat across from me and asked what I was reading. Only when he touched my hand did I look up.

“Hello, wife.”

Now the story truly begins.
