Sunday Morning Tea: Nov 6, 2022

Good Sunday morning and welcome to my front porch for Sunday Morning Tea!

For the uninitiated, Sunday Morning Tea is my virtual writing salon, where we talk about our writing goals and projects while sipping on a hot cuppa tea!

This morning I’m back where it all started, my mom’s front porch. I’m visiting this week for her birthday, so this morning we’re having English Breakfast, biscuits, and pretending to be British.

Kidding! Let’s talk about what we’ve been writing this week.

#IWSG: The NaNoWriMo Curse

a woman with eyeglasses writing on white paper under a light

Good morning! It’s the first Wednesday of the month, which means it’s Insecure Writer’s Support Group Day! let’s get into today’s question, shall we?

November 2 question: November is National Novel Writing Month. Have you ever participated? If not, why not?

Ugh!

NaNoWriMo has been the bane of my existence for nearly a decade now. Why? Because I keep trying…and failing miserably. And even as the mere thought of participating in NaNoWriMo this year triggers violent regurgitations from the pit of my insecure writer’s stomach, the deranged masochist writer in me dares me to take the plunge once again.

Sunday Morning Tea: Oct 30, 2022

Good Sunday morning and welcome to my front porch for Sunday Morning Tea!

For the uninitiated, Sunday Morning Tea is my virtual writing salon, where we talk about our writing goals and projects while sipping on a hot cuppa tea!

This morning, I’m drinking my second-favorite tea blend, Stash’s Wild Raspberry Hibiscus (previously my favorite before I discovered Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice and swiftly became addicted). I’ve never been a big fan of herbal tea, my mom is a black tea drinker, and I am my mother’s daughter, so I drink it too.

To clarify, she’s a drinker of black tea, though she is also Black, so…unintentional pun there! 😀

My aunt was that one who introduced me to the hibiscus tea, and immediately I was hooked on the floral aroma, the tangy sweetness. I like to have it with a lemon wedge and a teaspoon of honey.

I used to buy this tea at one of my favorite health foods stores—the only store in town that seemingly had the tea in stock—and when the store went out of business, I was devastated. But my mom ordered me a year’s supply on Stash’s website that Christmas, which I probably could have done myself, but I was a happy girl either way!

Anyway, enough about tea. Let’s talk about writing, shall we?

Sunday Morning Tea: Oct 23, 2022

Good Sunday morning and welcome to my front porch for Sunday Morning Tea!

It’s a beautiful sunrise—a bit chilly, but that is what our tea is for!

I must confess, I’m a tea-a-holic. I’ve got so much tea that if I were to drink a cup a day, I would be supplied for the next few years. Despite this, I still buy more. Why? Well, it’s one thing to have an endless supply of tea. But to have an endless supply of your favorite tea? Yeah, I don’t quite have enough to drink that every day for the next few years.

Currently my favorite is Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice. It’s the perfect brew for these crisp autumn mornings. It has all those familiar flavors of fall, with just a hint of heat on your tongue at the end. I usually drink my tea with sugar, but this is one of the few teas that I can drink without sugar and it still tastes sweet.

But this post isn’t only about my tea obsession. Let’s talk about writing!

Sunday Morning Tea: An Invitation

“Sunday Morning Tea” was the title of a short story I wrote several years ago on this blog, one of the first stories to ever be posted actually.

It was complete and utter trash. Don’t bother looking for it. It has since been deleted in the ongoing purge.

But in that story, I talked about how my mom used to sit on the front porch on Sunday mornings with a warm cup of tea and watch and listen to the neighborhood wake up.

…the birds chirping in the bushes…

…the leaves rustling in the wind…

…the neighbor who overslept on Saturday mowing the grass before church…

…the parishioners dressed in their Sunday best gathering on the front lawn of the tiny Baptist chapel across the street…

She’d sit, listen, and sip.

Sometimes I would join her, and we’d talk about whatever’s been pressing on our minds that week. Or we’d just sit in silence and drink our tea.

A change is coming…

I have a confession to make…

I’ve been feeling a bit different…

In fact, ever since writing my “Delete. Delete. Delete.” post, I’ve felt my blog has been going in a different direction. Even more different from where it was originally headed when I initially started this cleanup project.

What are you saying, Nortina?

In short? Lovely Curses is dead.

How to Resurrect “Dark Universe” and Produce Interconnected Monster Movies the “Right” Way | Part 2

Good afternoon, fellow horror movie fanatics! In Part 1 of this series, I imagined myself as a studio exec at Universal in charge of reviving the prematurely terminated “Dark Universe,” our cinematic universe of classic monsters!

In step 1 of my plan, I established Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy as canon (pretending all subsequent Mummy movies never existed, similar to the endless timelines for Halloween). In step 2, the BIG bad made his terrifying debut: Dracula! Son of the Devil!

Next we’ll explore how this universe will continue and, if possible, search for a feasible ending…

#IWSG: Give Me Something Twisted

Good morning! And welcome to another Insecure Writer’s Support Group Day! I wait impatiently for these every month, so let’s get right to it, shall we?

October 5 question – What do you consider the best characteristics of your favorite genre?

This question is a tough one because I don’t think I really have a favorite genre. I do have a few genres that I don’t particularly care for, but as long as the book hooks me in and keeps me invested, I’ll read pretty much anything.

Can a Cinematic Universe Featuring Universal’s Classic Monsters Really Work? | Part 1

Hello, October! It’s the beginning of spooky season and also International Coffee Day, so grab yourself a French roast (or whatever international flavor suits your fancy) and sit down for a chat, because I’m in a talkative mood today!

31 Days of Halloween Hooligans

A few years ago, I started a series on my blog called 31 Days of Holiday Hooligans. It was my blog’s equivalent of Freeform’s 25 Days of Christmas and Lifetime and Hallmark Channel’s yearly blitz of sappy holiday-themed movies starting around Thanksgiving (and some years sooner).

Every December, I would post short stories and poems featuring all kinds of holiday shenanigans.

I use the term “hooligan” loosely, of course, for the purpose of alliteration. The holiday fun doesn’t get that wild…usually…

This year I’ve decided to bring the challenge to my second-favorite time of year: spooky season, aka, Halloween! As a girl who loves ghost stories and anything monster (vampires, werewolves, mummies, oh my!), I can’t believe I haven’t thought of this sooner!
