Lioness and cub

She waits in the school parking lot as the students file onto their buses. She scans the faces of each person exiting the building. Soon she spots her prey.

“Mr. Calloway?” Se fuerte, she encourages herself. Be Maila’s example.

“Oh, Mrs. Gonzales?” She senses the shakiness in his voice. It’s the motivation she needs.

“You called my daughter illegal?”

“No, no, no. She misunderstood.”

“Her first language is English.”

“I—”

“You’re pretty speechless when it’s someone your own age confronting you.”

He remains silent.

“Stick to teaching math and stop bullying kids.”

In the car, Maila studies times tables.
