Morning Inspiration: Writing Prompt No. 8

Good morning! Rise and shine! May I borrow a minute of your time for some quick inspiration?

Why hello there. It is I, your favorite little elf, come to get you in the holiday spirit because Christmas is only three weeks away! Have you finished your Christmas shopping? Set up your tree? Hid the presents from the kiddos?

Today’s Prompt

Wrapped

My Inspired Story

“Are you truly husband material?” She hands him a roll of wrapping paper, a pair of scissors, Scotch tape, and a shoe box. “Let’s see what you got.”

My fiancĂ© shakes the box and looks at her with a raised eyebrow. “It’s empty.”

She nods. “I know.”

“You want me to wrap and empty box.”

“Yes.”

He turns to me to me and gives me this look that says, “What’s wrong with your sister?”

It’s a family tradition, and with me being the baby of six children, all girls, and she the eldest, it’s unavoidable.

“Just do what she says.”

“Every new brother-in-law has had to take this test, so might as well get it over with,” my sister chimes in.

He shrugs and then spreads everything out on the counter, setting up his own Santa’s little workshop. He rolls out the wrapping paper, twice the length of the shoe books, then glides the scissors from end to end.

“Ah, don’t you just love that sound!” my sister squeals. She’s never short of commentary.

He rolls the box in the paper and applies about a foot of tape. For the extra paper on the ends of the box, he folds them over like envelope flaps and tops them with another inch of tape. Once done, he tosses the box back to my sister, who frowns at him.

“You happy with this?” she asks, giving it a 360-degree inspection.

“Well, I mean, I’m not the best wrapper,” he says, rubbing his hands on the front of his jeans.

“None of us are,” I say. He looks at me confused.

“Gotta make sure you won’t outshine us.” She hands the box back to him. “Welcome to the family.”
