
“Maybe it was morse code.”
“What?”
“The knocking.”
“From the phantom prisoner in your imaginary boyfriend’s basement?”
It sounds worse coming from Mel, who half listens, typing away on her phone.
I wish I could text him. Not that I really want to, but if it meant having a semblance of truth…
“You should stop drinking.”
“This is water.”
“You were drunk that night.”
Because my best friend stood me up on my birthday. But I say, “Not that drunk.”
And with my hangover gone, there’s no denying what I see now. Him, at the hostess stand, with another woman.
